  • Outrage over 15-year-old's brutal gang beating in Paris (en)

  • A teenage boy whose vicious beating was filmed in a video that went viral over the weekend has awoken from his coma, his mother said Monday, as officials vowed to find and punish the assailants.

The attack against Yuriy, 15, in a busy and well-heeled neighbourhood of the capital shocked residents, though police have noted violent disputes between rival bands of youths in the area.

His mother Nataliya Kruchenyk told BFM television that Yuriy "is trying to speak" and was improving after doctors put him in an artificial coma after the January 15 attack near a shopping mall in the 15th district of Paris.

Kruchenyk said her son had left school with friends when he was accosted by around a dozen people, a scene captured by a surveillance camera.

The attackers, some hiding their faces with hoods, kicked and punched him as he lay on the ground, and also struck him with what appears to be a tool.

Lawmakers and celebrities including footballer Antoine Griezmann and actor Omar Sy of the hit series "Lupin" denounced the assault, which police said might have resulted from a gang rivalry.

An official in President Emmanuel Macron's office has also discussed the attack with Yuriy's mother, his office said Sunday.

"We are doing everything possible to resolve this matter and identify and arrest the assailants," Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz told AFP on Sunday.

Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti vowed on Twitter that "there will be no impunity for Yuriy's aggressors".

Macron has promised to reduce crime and insecurity while bolstering investments for police, who are meeting with Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Monday for talks on reforming security services and addressing claims of police violence, in particular toward minorities.
